EGG FREEZING

step by step to happiness...

Egg freezing

Egg freezing is the process of freezing the eggs obtained from a woman's ovary, namely the eggs to have a baby in the future. As we age, the quality and number of eggs decrease. With egg freezing, a woman can have a baby when she feels ready.

How is egg freezing carried out?

On the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation, egg growth treatment is started for 10-15 days with hormone injections. The growth process of the eggs is often followed by ultrasound. When the eggs have reached a sufficient size, a cracking needle is made and after 36 hours the eggs are collected under anaesthesia. Oocytes are collected by vitrification, i.e. rapid freezing. Egg cellsr are frozen in a liquid nitrogen tank at -196 degrees. The storage period is 5 years, but after 5 years this period can be extended at the request of the person with the approval of the Ministry.

The importance of egg freezing

The ageing of the egg makes pregnancy more difficult. The quality of eggs frozen at a young age will be the same in later years. In other words, ageing of the uterus does not prevent the fertilisation process. It is important for fertilisation that the egg is young. The number and quality of eggs decreases with age. Women with low ovarian reserve, have a lower chance of getting pregnant on their own. In some cases, pregnancy can also result in a miscarriage. The younger the egg is frozen, the higher the chance of a future pregnancy.

Does freezing harm the oocytes?

When egg cells are frozen, intracellular molecular movement and cell metabolism are stopped for a short time. In this way, the cells do not die. The death of cells is caused by ice crystals that form inside the cell. This situation is prevented by the freezing technique used, i.e. no ice crystals form and the cells are stored in liquid nitrogen for years

Are babies healthy when pregnant by frozen eggs?

Egg freezing does not harm the unborn baby. When comparing the obstetric and perinatal outcomes of babies born with egg freezing and those born with fresh eggs, no difference was observed in the studies. Furthermore, freezing the embryos to be retrieved from frozen oocytes has no negative impact on the birth rate.

For whom can egg freezing be used?

  • Women who are going to undergo chemotherapy for cancer.
  • Those who will have to undergo surgery, causing them to lose ovarian function.
  • Those with a low egg reserve
  • Those with a family history of early menopause
  • Women who want to have a baby at an older age
