The story of the first IVF baby...
In 1973, fertilisation of the human ovum outside the body was achieved, but no pregnancy could be achieved from the embryo formed. In 1978, the first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was born in England.The historical journey of IVF treatment in Turkey began in 1988 at Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. With the work of Prof. Dr. Refik Çapanoğlu and Prof. Dr. Erol Tavmergen, the first IVF centre in Turkey was opened in 1988. On 18 April 1989, Prof. Dr. Refik Çapanoğlu and Prof. Dr. Erol Tavmergen performed the first in vitro fertilisation practice in Turkey at Ege University's Family Planning Research and Application Centre, and Turkey's first IVF baby, Ece Çokar, was born.
