More than 20,000 IVF in 30 yearsProf. Dr. Erol Tavmergen, lecturer at Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and coordinator of Ege University's Infertility Research and Application Centre, who developed the first in vitro fertilisation practice in Turkey, said: "About 34 years ago, the studies we conducted at Ege University could only be of benefit to a certain proportion of childless patients. Patients with blocked fallopian tubes were unfortunately called "infertile" when they could not see any benefit despite various operations. In order to solve this, we have received training on this subject in different countries since 1985 and subsequently established the first embryology laboratory in Turkey. We worked on different experimental models for 3 years. In 1988, the first IVF centre in Turkey was licensed at Ege University. We started our activities in June. Our first IVF baby was born on 18 April 1989. The second children were twins. They were also born on 2 May 1989. In exactly 30 years, more than 20,000 children have been born through the activities at our centre."
