The process of fertilising the sperm by injection into the egg is called microinjection (intracytoplasmic sperm injection/ICSI).
How is the microinjection performed?
In IVF treatment, the ovaries are stimulated with medication and the development of the eggs is monitored. When the eggs have reached the desired size, they are collected by breaking them open and stored in the laboratory until the microinjection process. Then each sperm is injected into an egg using a micromanipulator. Afterwards, the incubator is stored in a special solution in the equipment and the next day it is checked whether fertilisation has occurred.
For which persons is a microinjection used?
It is generally used in couples diagnosed with infertility.
It is preferred when no results can be achieved with vaccinations or classical treatment methods.
The microinjection method is used when the sperm of father candidates do not meet certain criteria in terms of number, motility and structural characteristics, or when there is a problem with fertilisation during IVF treatment.
This method is also used for patients undergoing preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).
What are the advantages of the microinjection method?
After the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) method, the microinjection method in IVF treatment is the application with the highest fertilisation rate. In addition, fertilisation can be achieved with the microinjection method in patients with low sperm count and quality.
