Uterine film (HSG) is an X-ray that shows the uterus and fallopian tubes. Unlike normal X-rays, it allows visualisation of the uterus and fallopian tubes with a special fluid from the cervix. This helps to learn about pathologies related to the inner wall of the uterus and problems related to the fallopian tubes.
How is a uterine film taken?
First, the patient is placed on the X-ray table in the gynaecological examination position. The vagina is sterilised and the cervix is fixed. A soft plastic cannula is inserted through the cervix and a special fluid is injected through the cervix into the uterus. The iodine in this fluid, which gives a better view of the uterus and fallopian tubes, detects X-rays and helps with diagnosis on the imaging machine. After the fluid has spread into the uterus, an image is taken with the X-ray machine. HSG takes about 15-20 minutes.
What should be done before the uterine film?
Sexual intercourse is prohibited during the uterine film to avoid pregnancy. You should drink the antibiotic prescribed by the doctor 3 days before the uterine film. There is usually no pain during the uterine film, but a pain like menstrual pain is usually felt. However, as this situation varies from person to person, you can have a uterine film taken under anaesthesia if you wish.
Why is uterine film necessary?
In women with infertility problems, HSG is needed to find the reasons that prevent pregnancy.
It is done to stop miscarriages or to minimise the risks of abortions of unknown cause.
It is performed to diagnose serious diseases such as abnormalities in the uterine ducts and cancer.
What should I do after the uterine film?
You should not have sexual intercourse for the first 2 weeks.
You may experience mild back and groin pain. If your doctor prescribes painkillers, you can take them.
If complications occur after the uterine film, such as fever, foul-smelling discharge, nausea and vomiting, a doctor should be consulted.
